AGNC: Spread Pressure Tests a Constructive MBS Setup
AGNC's near-term results show that a constructive Agency MBS supply-demand backdrop is not enough to offset spread volatility. The longer-term case rests on disciplined capital deployment, hedging and leverage management converting wider spreads and stronger demand into sustainable returns.

What changed
The current quarter was materially weaker than the prior quarter's confident outlook: AGNC reported a loss and negative economic return after spreads widened, while management highlighted new income opportunities in TBA financing, a lower expected MBS supply profile and an opportunistic equity raise. Portfolio positioning also moved toward lower-coupon pools with a positive duration gap.
Guidance delta
No formal guidance was provided. Relative to the prior quarter, the call emphasized a more cautious near-term setup after spread widening and a negative quarterly economic return, while retaining a constructive view of Agency MBS supply-demand conditions.
Key takeaways
- Q1 produced a $0.18 per-share loss and a negative 1.6% economic return as Agency MBS spreads widened amid geopolitical risk and uncertain rate-cut expectations.
- Management cited tighter supply, money-manager inflows and potential regulatory support as constructive for Agency MBS.
- A $401 million ATM equity raise was described as accretive, while portfolio positioning shifted toward lower-coupon pools and a positive duration gap.
- The main tension is between attractive spread opportunities and risks from rates, prepayments, hedging and leverage.
Management priorities
- Continue opportunistic purchases of low-coupon Agency MBS and specified pools.
- Maintain a positive duration gap and adjust hedges, leverage and coupon strategy as conditions change.
- Deploy raised capital selectively and monitor GSE, Federal Reserve and bank-capital developments.
