PPL Q1 2026: EPS and Revenue Beat, Data-Center Pipeline Grows to 28.3 GW

PPL Corporation's Q1 2026 results reinforce the profile of a regulated utility leveraging surging data-center electricity demand to drive above-average earnings growth. The company beat consensus on both EPS and revenue while reaffirming its 2026 guidance and $23 billion capital plan. The data-center pipeline expanded from roughly 25 GW to 28.3 GW quarter-over-quarter, underpinning at least $500 million in incremental transmission investment. New clean-energy partnerships with Rye Development for a 266 MW pumped-storage hydro facility and X-energy for small modular reactors add long-term generation optionality in Kentucky. A favorable Pennsylvania rate settlement resolved a key regulatory overhang. Despite these operational positives, the market reacted negatively, with the stock declining 3.2% on an abnormal basis and continuing to drift lower, suggesting investors are weighing…

What changed

Versus the prior quarter, the data-center pipeline grew from approximately 25 GW to 28.3 GW, an increase of 3.3 GW. The Pennsylvania base-rate case, previously a pending concern, was settled with less than a 4% bill increase and a two-year stay-out provision. The Kentucky rate case moved from pending to active reconsideration by the PSC. Two new strategic partnerships were announced: Rye Development for a 266 MW pumped-storage hydro facility on former coal land in Kentucky, and X-energy to evaluate Xe-100 small modular reactors for large-load customers. Management signaled at least $500 million in incremental transmission capex for data-center load beyond the existing $1.3 billion plan. Q1 ongoing EPS of $0.63 beat the $0.616 consensus estimate by 2.3%, and revenue of $2.77 billion exceeded estimates by 10.6%. The 2026 guidance range of $1.90-$1.98 per share was reaffirmed without change. The market reaction was negative, with a 3.2% abnormal decline and 1.6% subsequent drift lower, despite the earnings beat.

Guidance delta

PPL reaffirmed its 2026 ongoing earnings guidance of $1.90-$1.98 per share, unchanged from the prior quarter's introduction. The 6%-8% EPS CAGR target through 2029 was maintained. The $5.1 billion 2026 capital plan and $23 billion 2026-2029 investment program remain on track, with management now signaling at least $500 million in incremental transmission capex for data-center load beyond the existing $1.3 billion transmission plan. Guidance sentiment was maintained across both quarters.

Key takeaways

  • Q1 2026 ongoing EPS of $0.63 beat consensus of $0.616 by 2.3%, while revenue of $2.77 billion exceeded estimates by 10.6%.
  • 2026 earnings guidance of $1.90-$1.98 per share was reaffirmed, maintaining the 6%-8% EPS growth target through 2029.
  • Data-center pipeline grew to 28.3 GW from approximately 25 GW in the prior quarter, driving at least $500 million in incremental transmission investment.
  • Pennsylvania base-rate settlement was approved with less than a 4% bill increase and a two-year stay-out provision, resolving a key regulatory overhang.
  • New partnerships with Rye Development (266 MW pumped-storage hydro) and X-energy (Xe-100 SMRs) expand clean generation optionality in Kentucky.
  • Despite the operational beat, the stock fell 3.2% on an abnormal basis with continued downward drift, trading at $35.35 versus a consensus analyst target of $41.25.

Management priorities

  • Advance the Blackstone joint venture toward commercial contracts, with potential announcements later in 2026.
  • Develop the 266 MW pumped-storage hydro project with Rye Development on former coal land in Kentucky.
  • Evaluate Xe-100 small modular reactor deployment with X-energy for large-load customers in Kentucky.
  • Allocate at least $500 million in additional transmission capex for data-center interconnection beyond existing plans.
  • Potentially file a new Kentucky CPCN later in 2026 to address projected 3.5 GW of load growth.
  • Maintain capital discipline through equity financing via the ATM program and opportunistic structures.

Methodology

Reported and consensus figures come from FN2's earnings event records. Market reaction and volume are calculated from daily adjusted bars around the event; abnormal move subtracts the SPY move over the same window.

Analyst target low, average, and high values are derived at request time from each named analyst's latest persisted FMP target. The current-price marker comes from FN2's persisted market snapshot. They are sell-side estimates, not an FN2 valuation or recommendation.

Transcript intelligence is a structured synthesis of the current and prior earnings-call analyses. Missing values stay missing and are never estimated.
